MS, VC, AR, MM, VP, LL, LG, LR, JC, AA, CG, FW, MP, KB, NS, KW...

What do these letters mean? How are they related? What are the next 2 letters in the sequence? Do they all have significance, or only a few of them?

These are questions I've been wondering about a lot lately....

Let's talk comics. A friend once commented I ought to have a a comics sections, seeing as how they're so important to me. So, while I build that part of the site, this'll have to do. Let's review a couple of this week's offerings:

Avengers #500: There's nothing like a "milestone issue" to shake things up. A book lasts 500 issues, someone's gotta die to commemorate it. This issue had 3 confirmed deaths, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Man, I LOVE Bendis!

Astonishing X-Men #3: When they told me Joss Whedon was gonna write X-Men, I thought, "Great, 'Buffy' with mutants!" I was being sarcastic when I said this, but I've learned that i really like Whedon's writing style. You definitely see the Buffy in it, but who cares? Anyway, this issue had Beast vs. Wolverine. Never really seen that conflict before. Hope I never see it again.

Amazing Spider-Man #510: This book is the clusterfuck of the week. You mean to tell me Gwen Stacy was pregnant?!! All those years ago, she ran off to France to give birth to kids we've never heard of? I know that time has actually passed in the Spider World, but I never thought THAT much time had passed. Peter was about 15 when bitten, and I figured he was late twenties now. Well, Gwen's kids are back, and they're out to kill Peter Parker. They seem a lot older than the maximum age of 12 that they should be. Let's see how this one pans out. GWEN HAD KIDS?!!!

X-Statix #25: The group & The Avengers form a truce. When the dust settles, the X-Statix team considers disbanding. No, this isn't a big deal. They do this after EVERY major adventure. in fact, it's to be expected every 5 or so issues of this book. But this time it's for real, 'cause the book's cancelled. Better enjoy those last 2 issues...

Excalibur #3: Marvel must really want me to hate Charles Xavier. They've gone back to this whole Mutant Martin Luther King persona for him that I've never really cared for. And Genosha's always been a shitty locale. Who thought a book about mutants in Genosha would be entertaining?!! For the uninitiated, here's an analogy for ya: the theme of this book is the equivalent of having Holocaust survivors go back to the camps, and run them themselves. It makes no sense. Nor does this book.

I leave you with this great & poignant quote from the Powers #1 letters page:

"i swear to fucking god, if wolverine becomes an avenger I am going to kill my family. How much shit am I supposed to take in my life??? Why is this happening to me??!!" -skeetboy

"I am a War President! I sit in the Oval Office, making important decisions, all the time with WAR ON MY MIND!"

-who do you think?

I swear, I missed the Clinton years because that man was an entertaining gentleman. He was a Playa's Playa. But now, I find The Replacement to be just as entertaining, but in a comedic sort of way. Great comedic timing. Too bad he was being serious....

Anyway, I'd kinda like Clinton & Bush to team up. Just think about it. It'd be like "48 Hours" or "Fastlane".  I call it "Bushwhacked!" Don't forget the exclamation point; that's a very important part of the title! A good "buddy cop" scenario. One guy would be busy chasing skirts, while the other is the tough-as-nails take no guff, "bad cop", who's hell-bent on getting his man. Wow, that'd be a great show. Too bad it won't happen....Well, who knows what'll happen after November? After all, there was talk of Clinton having his own daytime talkshow at one point. Man, it would've sucked for the former POTUS to get stomped by Oprah in the ratings. Either way, I'd look closely at UPN's next Fall lineup if I were you. You never know what might pop up...

My open letter to all White people ages 14-25:
Why is it that you ALL, at some point in your lives, have been lifeguards? I mean it. I defy you to find one White person in this demographic who has never been employed as a lifeguard. Is it something deemed at birth? Do you have a special affinity for aquatics? Is it like the White Selective Service? Are y'all drafted? It's not a big deal, but it's just something I've noticed over the years. Wondered if anyone could shed some light on this....

So, last night I had a great conversation with the most interesting person I think I've ever met in my life. It was definitely one of those situations where I thought, "I sure didn't think this was gonna happen when I woke up this morning!" Completely out of the blue, but a great experience.  There's just something about learning about another person, especially when you learn you have so much in common. Anyway, I think I've gotta put a gauge on how much info I reveal to people, but I just felt really comfortable. I definitely learned a LOT, and I'm still processing some of it. But I can't wait to see what this Party Monster brings next, 'cause after all, there ain't no party like an S Club party....

I'm too lazy for a big post right now, but I figured it was time for an update.

Quick Thoughts:

- Bryan Singer's directing "Superman". Yah! ...Which means no "X3". Boo! There goes the X-Men movie franchise..

-Jessica Alba as Sue Storm in "Fantastic Four"? She's cute and all, but I hate to admit I was more excited when I heard Jessica Simpson was up for the part...

-I started Driver's Ed this week. Really forgot what it meant to be 15 yr's old. No, I was NEVER like that, but it sure is weird. i don't even get these kids. I made a "California Dreams" reference, and the room went silent. Crazy, young whippersnappers...

-Apparently, there's a Green Lantern movie in the making, but Warner Bros is gonna make it a comedy, and they're currently talking to Jack Black about starring in it. For every "Spider-Man", there's a "Howard The Duck"....

-I ended my sordid 5-year marriage to M&T Bank, due to "Irreconcileable Differences". When the teller asked why I wanted to close the account, I simply told him, "You know...I just really don't like you...I mean, the service is terrible, I'm tired of the charges, and you all had a monopoly where I went to college. But now....I just don't want this anymore." Best (and only) break-up speech I've ever given, thank you very much!

-For you comic kids out there, pick up The Pulse #4. One of the HEAVIEST and MOST POWERFUL talkers in recent years. Very little action, but really adds something to the whole Spider-Man franchise, especially if you're a continuity buff like me! I LOVE Bendis!

-And for those of you who're curious, my songs ARE up now, but the links aren't working for some reason. I made the HTML tags myself, and I was quite proud, but they don't seem to want to work. So, for now, just copy the URL's and enjoy my bootlegged goodness. AND, if that doesn't work, hope on over to http://www.freewebs.com/williambrucewestmusic/
Go easy on me, 'cause it IS a template, but it's my first personal foray into site building. I made sure to make it the CHEESIEST, most CLICHE site around. It's got a midi and a bubble effect. All I need now is a counter, guestbook, and a bunch of Hello Kitty shout-outs to all my girls in my ballet class.I'm not even sure it'll stick around, but I really needed a place to store these mp3s. So, click and enjoy. Or hate. Either way, drop me a line and tell me what you think.

-Go see "Anchorman"!!! Funniest thing I've seen in ages. Funnier than Sealab, Family Guy, or Best Week Ever. Even if you hate those shows, GO SEE IT!!!

Wow, it's been a long time since an adventure like THAT! So, last night was quite a night...

First off, my day started kinda shitty 'cause I was late to work for reasons that I couldn't control, yet they still wrote me up for it. I started the whole "I'm too good for this shit, why am I here, I really gotta leave this place" stuff in my head. Then, out of nowhere, I started getting all these compliments.

We have this thing called a "Snap Board" where people give you "snaps" for doing something good. I saw that I had 3 new snaps for stuff I hadn't even realized I'd done. I was like, "Wow, they really like me"..Still too good for that place, though.

So, we were all trying to hang out after work 'cause one of the guys had a friend in town, and he wanted to have a big group go out. We were going to Dave & Buster's, but at the last minute, he decided to go to Apex. That's the curse of being the only straight male in the H&M Corporation. I was NOT going to Apex 'cause I didn't feel like dealing with all of that, so I opted out. Which sucked 'cause Natalie was going, and I really wanted to hang out with her.

Anyway, one of my managers had really been looking forward to D&B, and since it was just upstairs, we decided to go anyway. Now, I was kinda weirded out at first. She's definitely cool, but she IS my manager, and I don't think we're even allowed to hang out, or at least "fraternize" as the handbook calls it. But, surprisingly, we had a wonderful time. She's awesome, and I kinda feel like her sidekick sometimes. Anyway, after D&B kicked us out so they could close, I called JJ, and he said he'd come pick me up.

Now, from the producers of "Dude, Where's My Car?" and "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle", comes "Will & JJ's 'Ho Hunt". It's not as misogynistic as it sounds, but it is a literal definition of what happened next. We got bored, and were just driving around, as we found ourselves downtown, around K & 12th Streets. Anyone from this region knows what that meant; politicians ain't the only thing downtown. All of a sudden, prostitutes were coming out of the woodwork. The service roads were backed up with dudes pulling over trying to get a little lovin'.

We were stopped behind a minvan @ a traffic light, when suddenly, a 'ho just pops out of the side door, adjusting her outfit. I swear, I BET a segment of the Bang Bus was happening right in front of us, and we never even knew it.

So, as we keep driving, trying to get back to MD, more and more hookers. Then, the cops came. They started taping off the service roads so the 'hos would have nowhere to pick up Johns. Then, they started stopping the younger looking ones, lecturing them about the dangers. It was just like it happens on "COPS".

The crowning moment of the night was when we saw a guy running out of the alley, smiling like it was his birthday, as he pulled up his pants. JJ's golden statement? "Dude, he just got served!"

Finally got out of Gomorrah, and passed out at home around 6 AM. Man, that was fun....

I'm going to venture into territory I don't much explore: the movie review.

Tonight's victim: "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever"

Let me just say that this is a very good bad movie. What do I mean? I mean, as far as bad movies go, this one does a great job of being a bad movie. It's so bad, you have to like it, just for the facts that A) someone had the audacity to film it and B) some studio head was coked out of his mind enough to buy it. Kinda like "Center Stage"...man, did that movie try hard!

Let's see..what's this movie about? Well, Antonio Banderas is a former special agent, reinstated to bring in Lucy Liu, who's believed to be some kind of crazy killer. After a whole bunch of plot twists, it becomes "Ecks Teams Up With Sever", without the predictable romantic subtext. In fact, very little chemistry develops between the two due to Lucy's 20-line limit in the movie. I swear, if she got standard union rate, Lucy Liu only made about $5,000 from this movie.

Best line of the movie: "Some women buy shoes..." Trust me, it makes sense if you hate your life enough to watch this movie.

Best part of the movie: Sever kills Darth Maul. I don't care what Lucy's character's name is, she's always "the bitch from Ally McBeal". Talk about typecast. Anyway, during this scene, all I could think was, "I'll bet Callista Flockhart awkwardly walks around the corner any minute!"

Asian-American director, Kaos, does a great job downplaying the obvious minority stereotypes, yet this time PC=crappy movie. Sorry, Kaos.

Now, don't get me wrong. As much as I'm bashing this thing, understand that I still enjoyed it. In fact, I want a sequel! Call me a glutton for punishment. I think they could milk a trilogy out of this! Then again, I'm the guy who's still waiting for a sequel to "Super Mario Bros"! I mean, c'mon, the friggin' Princess needed their help again!

Speaking of bad movies, why do studios load DVDs with useless special features? My biggest gripe is when they list "interactive menu" as a special feature. I mean, isn't that a pre-req of the DVD format? And how "interactive" can it get? They might as well just say "responds to remote control button press". This little gem of a movie had the balls to include a "making of" featurette. Nothing quite like watching the creation of a bad movie, following said bad movie. Of course, everyone's thinking, "I wonder what the hell that guy was thinking?" Well, here it is. Now you know, and everyone's laughing 'cause they all "had such fun filming this movie". I'd have fun too if I was being paid millions for MY shit.

I'm beginning to think Marvel Enterprises LOVES the courtroom. They're involved in so much litigation, I'm surprised they haven't tried to make a comic/movie franchise out of their trials. First, Marvel sues Sony. Then, Stan Lee sues Marvel. Now, the big one....

Marvel vs. Disney!

This is like "Allah vs. God". There's no real winner here, since they're both guilty of similar transgressions, and they both seem poised for world domination. Although, Disney never seems to lose these kinds of affairs.

Apparently, when Disney bought ABC Family from Fox and Haim Saban, Marvel got screwed over since Disney got to continue to show Marvel programming, such as the Spider-Man , X-Men & Hulk cartoons. At the same time, Disney got tons of mileage out of these shows, while preferring to promote shit like Beyblade; basically Disney only promoted Disney shows. Well, Marvel wants it's cut. And, frankly, they deserve it. But I don't know if Disney's gonna see it that way. Meanwhile, Haim Saban's wiping his ass with twenties, still wondering how such a whacked-out concept like "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" (I still love you, baby!) made him a billionaire...

"I don't wanna be anything other than what I've been tryin' to be lately..."

Well, I guess they're trying to be grown ups. It seems that Chad Michael Murray & Sophia Bush, both 22 yr-old stars of the WB's "One Tree Hill", are engaged. Yeah....this one's got "forever" written all over it. Although, I'm still surprised that whole Freddie Prinze/Sara Michelle fiasco is still going strong....

"Show Me The Funny"

So, I've been sitting here, staring at the screen, wondering, "What the fuck?" How did we get here? The other day, I'm celebrating my blog anniversary, next thing I know, I'm in the middle of a Bill Maher siutation. This thing used to be funny, but now it's way too politically charged. No more!

Long story short, the last blog entry was directed at my webmistress over a conversation our "circle" had been having. Apparently, I hit a nerve, and my last post was a response to a post on her site.

Anyway, one of you out there felt that I was talking directly to you. Well, I wasn't. (If you're wondering what I mean by this, read my guestbook). Anyway, someone out there is lecturing me on freedom of speech and the freedom to express opinions. Well, that's all nice and good, but that's not exactly what our little argument was about. So, whoever you are, I don't know who you are. I guess you thought I should, but I don't. Sorry. So, I hope you feel either vindicated or stupid. Regardless, this is what happens when an A & B conversation becomes public; C ya later. Whoever you are, if you really want to confront me, e-mail me. You claim to know me, so I guess you know how that e-mail thing works...

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Wow, big words. Perhaps if you'd calm down, and realize the rampant racism in YOUR OWN life, rather than every little injustice that DOESN'T affect you, perhaps you'd understand what I was saying. So many people wanna look good on a soapbox, not even wondering who their audience is. You wanna keep crusading, keep right on. But your credibility only takes a hit when your own affairs are being swept under the rug, potentially hurting those around you. Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it. Oh yeah, I guess "fuck me".

HAPPY BLOG BIRTHDAY!!!!
Not only does today commemorate my one year anniversary of blogging, but this is also my 175th post! Boy, do I love a good milestone!

Wow, one whole year! A year ago, I was basically married, bitter @ the world, and living in Ithaca. Today, I'm completely divorced, bitter @ the world, and living in MD. "The more things change, the more they stay the same". For the people no longer with us, I guess you can say they helped to "usher" in this new era...

So, I guess you're saying, "Williambrucewest.com has only been around since April." Yes, you're right, but a handful of you know that, prior to April, I posted to a site known as "The World According to A Russian Exchange Student". Those people have commented, "Will, even though you were an exchange student to Russia, you weren't Russian, so the title's incorrect." Well, to clarify, originally, I was sort of ashamed of some of the stuff I was posting. Initially, I wanted to sort of hide behind a pseudonym, so I had planned to post under the guise of the exchange student who came to live with me.

You see, in my opinion, there's nothing cuter than a foreigner who doesn't have a grasp on America and the English language. Yes, that may sound exploitative, but I love when someone learning English will ask, "How do you say...?" While my exchange student stayed with us, he had a lot of valuable insight on the US, while at the same time he said things that were just too funny for words. In the early days of blogging, whenever I'd read an off-the wall news article, I'd wonder, "What would Sergei have to say about this?". Well, as interesting an idea as that was, you can only walk in another man's shoes for so long, and I kind of abandoned the "human interest" aspect of blogging. Instead, it was Punky Brewster this and Nsync that. Honestly, I'd rather stay away from the whole "Man, the world/America is so f-ed up" 'cause that's what James & Jenn are for. They're in the links, so check 'em out. At the same time, there's just not enough forums for pop culture, so by-gummit, I'm here to stay.

We're just getting started, and I'm only getting crazier, so I hope you've enjoyed the ride so far, and get ready for more years to come. I still don't have a clue as to who's reading this thing, but I do know about 5 of you have been here since the beginning, and I'd just like ya to know it means a lot to me, you mysterious masked marvels. Here's to next year, and hopefully, post #500!

Am I wrong for wanting to own "1 Night In Paris?" At least , see it?!!! I haven't seen it, nor have I seen the R. Kelly tape, and I gotta tell ya, I feel left out in the cold!

How is pop culture guru supposed to be at the top of his game if he hasn't seen the source of the latest sex scandal?!! Now, I missed the R. Kelly tape, I'm missing out on Paris, and now I hear about this Cameron Diaz tape. Was EVERYONE in need of money? How did they NOT think these things would surface? And here I am, like a perv, trying to track them down...

Dear Usher,
You're an asshole. What? You need me to clarify? Ok, let's get a few things straight.

I don't even know Chili, but I feel for what you did to her. In fact, I see what you're really doing here. Oh yeah, you're "confessing". you're so sorry! How sorry were you on top of the Billboard chart?!! It's one thing to fuck up, it's another thing to come clean about it. OK, you told the truth. You think you're off the hook? You're not. You were only supposed to tell Chili. Not the world. You're using this whole thing for personal gain! And you wanted her to take you back?!! Damn, you're a dumb asshole.

So, let me get this straight: You're not happy anymore, and it's not going anywhere, so y'all just needed to "let it burn", right? But then, you get a bitch pregnant, and suddenly Black Justin (I know you'll hate that!) ain't ready to be a daddy? Boo-hoo!

Why am I so angry with you? 'Cause I just watched a BET stretch of all your "Confessions" videos. When you see 'em back to back, the sincerity goes out the window.

Well, I guess you're a man now. You came clean. I guess you figure all is forgiven, eh? Well, that's between you and Chili. You know what I think, Usher? I hope T-Boz and Chili go to some old voodoo priestess, have her conjure up the ghost of Left-Eye, just so she come drag your ass down to Hell. Then we'll "let it burn"...

Sincerely,

Your Biggest Fan

So, I have a new "celebrity" crush, and I've actually met her, so she's "real". Here's the catch, though.

I found her blog online, and she mentions that she doesn't believe in God. Now, I know that's a weird criterion for me to have at this age, and it's just a crush, but I couldn't really see myself with someone who doesn't believe in God. My reasoning may surprise you.

If I'm with someone who doesn't believe in God, then who is she going to be calling out to? Who is she gonna be screaming for? And if she's yelling, "Oh God, Oh God!", then, well folks, I think we've got an actress on our hands!

Sick and twisted, I know....

Here's an interesting exchange from my day @ work:

Cute girl comes up to register.

Cute Girl: "Hey, did you just graduate from Cornell?"

Me: (Bewildered) "Yeah...about a year ago..."

CG: "And you sang with Last Call?"

Me: "...Yeah..."

CG: "I thought so! I'm a friend of John Cape. I turned around, and I was like, 'Wow, a celebrity sighting!'"

Me: "Wow...well, unfortunately this is more like the 'Behind the Music' phase of my life..."

So, I've just started developing another website. Yup, that's right. I'm cheating on all of you. Hell, I think it's about time I was in that seat anyway....But I digress. This site just won't allow me to hold all of the music files I promised so long ago. So, instead of settling and agreeing to pay DotEasy more money for more space, I think I'll just piggyback on one of those freewebs sites. So, to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of my net presence (you didn't know it'd been a year?), be on the look out for William Bruce West Music. Well, that's not exactly the domain name, nor will you really have to remember 'cause I'm just gonna hide files there and link to 'em here. Man, I just keep rambling tonight. Must be all that patriotism pent up inside me. Anyway, stay tuned....

So, saw Spider-Man 2 today. All I can say is WOW. I've always said that the first Spider-man was "The Best Comic Book Movie Of All Time". I was wrong. Spidey 2 now holds that distinction!

I LOVED the opening sequence where the main plot points of the first movie are conveyed through Alex Ross's artwork. I hate Alex Ross, 'cause I've heard nothing but accounts of him being an asshole, but the man does have a right to be. There's no competition in his realm; he is THE painter in the world of comics. Photographs couldn't have told the story better than his scenes, so I felt that was definitely an incredible aspect of the movie.

I can't even get into what makes it great, but it's the fact that we've all been or are Peter Parker. The everyman whose life just doesn't go as he'd wish. We all make promises we intend to keep, but things just get in the way. The only difference is that we, as real people, don't have as good an excuse for these faults as Peter does.

Anyway, great story. Really felt for Alfred Molina. He's just a guy who had a passion for science, and in his pursuit of a dream, lost everything he held dear.

Still hate Kirsten Dunst. She's the worst part of the franchise. And is it in her contract that she MUST be wet and braless @ least once a movie? Most guys wouldn't complain, but I'm tired of this frumpy snaggle-tooth being forced in my face as a "sex object". Hell, whoever plays Betty Brant is MUCH hotter that Kirsten Dunst.

Is it just me, or do we ALL know a "Harry Osborn"? Some privileged kid who wants nothing more than to fit in and be successful, but ends up pushing people away because of false bravado and theatrics? Cornell was full of them...

I also loved the cameos, like "Queer As Folk"/"I Love The '80s" star Hal Sparks in the hilarious elevator scene. Or "Chappelle Show's" Donell Rawlings ("Man, he stole that guy's pizzas!") Or Joy Bryant cheering Spidey along. And of course, the obligatory Stan Lee "I'm here 'cause I created this f-ing character" cameo. All of these were unnecessary, but as a pop culture guru, they added to my experience.

My only gripe is that Raimi seems to fixate on obnoxious themes each time around. The first movie had all the forced post-9/11 "Don't F--- with NYC" imagery. This movie has a "Godzilla -B Movie" feel to it whenever someone screamed. You had the "Look @ Camera.Freeze.Scream. Run Towards Camera Screaming" scenario. Especially in the hospital scene. The whole Terrified New Yorker role was HIGHLY exaggerated, but it didn't take much away from the movie. Now, the countdown begins for Spidey 3 in May 2007.

I wonder why no one approached Raimi to breathe life into the Batman franchise. I swear, Spidey is really edging Bats off my hero list. If Chris Nolan disappoints me with "Batman Begins", I'm scrapping my Bat Signal and using the parts to build web shooters (For you non-comic readers, Spidey actually has mechanical webshooters for his webs; unfortunately, Hollywood thought it'd be better if the webs came out of HIM for the movies, hence why you have no idea to what I'm referring.)
